A Brief History of the California Dial
The California, or "Cali", dial enjoys a rich military heritage consisting of a unique combination of Roman and Arabic numerals with bold horizontal indexes acting as natural separators whose combined use at first appears odd, but deftly results in one of the most recognisable dial layouts in watchmaking.
Originally developed to provide exceptional clarity for military use, it is the perfect fit for the Arne field watch and our natural bearer of this highly functional dial style, with it's own unique military heritage and a story of cunning deception.

CALI DIAL ORIGINS
The origins of the California dial can be traced back to the 1930s, appearing on experimental watches trialled by Rolex® and Panerai® for the Italian Navy. In 1941, Rolex patented an "error-proof" dial design with it's use of contrasting shapes and markers to make orientation instantly recognisable. No matter how the watch was viewed, the wearer could immediately identify the 12 o'clock position, a valuable feature in demanding military environments.

The name California or "Cali" dial arrived much later. During the 1970s and 1980s, collectors developed a growing appetite for vintage watches featuring these unusual Art Deco-inspired dials. Due to the high demand, a dial repair company in California began restoring and remaking this dial style. Their popularity and location stuck, and the "Cali" dial remains a sought after dial change.
CALI DIAL x EB ARNE
The Arne field watch takes its name from the nature reserve just across the water from our Poole Harbour HQ. During WWII, Arne became one of several "Starfish" decoy sites, designed to fool enemy aircraft into dropping their lethal loads on the wrong location to protect the Holton Heath Cordite Factory, just a stone's throw away. Cordite, used as a propellant in military ammunition, is a highly volatile material and a critical wartime resource. One morning, more than a hundred bomb craters scarred Arne, yet not a single one struck the factory it was protecting.
We are constantly inspired by the rich and diverse history surrounding us (you might connect the Holton collection and Holton Heath above) and it's with that as the backdrop, that the inclusion of the "Ultra Clear" military inspired dial markings became an obvious and perfect fit for Arne - packing this diminutive watch with a proper functional punch, just how we like it.

Looking at the hour markings and you’ll notice there’s a boldness to the distinctive design. The bold surface area of the markers allows them to be flooded with extra SuperLuminova®. The broad horizontal batons at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock combine with the unmistakable triangle at 12 to maximise legibility and separate the top and bottom halves of the dial with unmistakeable clarity. Add the distinctive mix of Roman and Arabic numerals, and orientation becomes almost instinctive.
